El Kaabi's Spectacular Goal Secures Morocco's Victory Against the Coelacanths in Afcon Opening Match.

The Morocco overcame a anxious start to beat their island opponents in the competition's opening game on Sunday, with goals from the Real Madrid attacker and super-sub El Kaabi in the latter period.

This constituted a far from convincing showing, however, from the highly fancied hosts, who are ranked 97 places higher than the small Indian Ocean nation in the world rankings and were forced to grind out for the three points in wet conditions at Rabat's national stadium.

Tense Start and Spurned Opportunities

Morocco missed an first-half penalty and were locked at 0-0 at the interval despite controlling possession, eventually opening the scoring in the 55th minute.

It came when full-back Mazraoui did well to keep the ball in play before slipping it square for DĂaz to sidefoot home.

“The opening game is always difficult but we improved in the second period,” said manager Regragui.

The Substitute's Moment of Magic

Any lingering nerves was subsequently calmed by a moment of pure genius from substitute El Kaabi. Only ten minutes following coming on, the forward met a ball into the box with a stunning bicycle kick in the 74th minute, making it two and ensuring the result.

Earlier in the match, the Moroccan team could have been ahead in the 11th minute when a spot-kick was given for a challenge on Brahim DĂaz. However, Rahimi's penalty was saved by Comoros goalkeeper Pandor.

Comoros Resistance and Second-Half Chance

The underdogs comfortably held their more illustrious opponents at bay before the Moroccans' superior firepower in the end made the difference.

Shot-stopper Pandor pulled off several further fine saves to keep down the score as the game wore on, although his team did have a chance for an equaliser shortly following DĂaz's goal, with SaĂŻd shooting straight at keeper Bounou.

Fitness Worry for Hosts

The victory was somewhat marred by an injury to the captain, Romain SaĂŻss, who was forced off after the 18th minute apparently in some distress.

This centre-back had just made his comeback to the international setup recently following a year’s layoff due to ankle surgery.

This result continues the team's record-breaking run of successive wins to 19, beating the previous record of 15 set by Spain between 2008 and 2009.
